Final Mock up and logo

The final layout of the book is an A5 portrait. main typeface is gill sans regular 9pt 11pt leading. The target audience was the general public ages 10 and above, the style can be related to the theme of the book, and still relate to the audience. Wanted to keep the style minimal and clean, with each page being a new experience, using different ways of showing images and text. Pleased with the final outcome and believe it fits the audience.

Pleased with my logo, simple and minimal with is the style i was creating, and it links in with the book well. i would maybe develop the logo more so its maybe a full page or can be seen as a main cover rather than a logo on the front.

Book Slip idea

With liking the thought of using embossing on the front of my book to make it feel more personal to people I have made a slip which the book will slide into and is embossed with the word 'MEMORIAL' in helvetica bold, sealed with a sticker with the branding printed on.

developed pages

I think a have  achieved  what i aimed to do which was make each page a new experience on each page. Used bold strong images to help show how horrible experience.

Logo development

Really like this version minimal and links in with the style of the book. typeface helvetica regular and light, reversed out type, wanted a solid strong logo which could maybe made into a monument and can be remembered, and still be relatable to the audience.

I wanted a strong minimal logo type, however this doesn't seem to read right, I think 'September Eleventh' should be either on the same line or in a block, this isn't highlighting the purpose just seems to be a title.

Came up with to different versions of logo types.

Mock ups

Decided to have a go with a hard back cover, although this would give the book a more solid feel, I almost want the book to feel delicate as it is representing a National tragedy. Really like the idea of the embossed feeling, but think i need to have the logo as the front cover, and maybe have a pocket or slip on cover to hold the book, making it feel like it can be something personal to remember the tragedy.

One of the double page spreads, used helvetica regular, 9pt type however i think this typeface doesn't relate to a memorial needs to be a warmer typeface not so harsh.

First page layouts

The first go at my double page spreads. I have used helvetica 8pt type, however i think the type on some of the pages feel a bit cold to say its a memorial, so i need to look at different typefaces (gill sans?). Tried to make each page a new experience, but there is still some changes that could make them better.

Book layout Ideas

For the layout ideas i'm using in my memorial book, are mostly inspired from, The Best of Brochure Design: v. 11, and 9 by Kiki Eldridge,

Looking at different layout styles, with different grid systems, think a simple gris system, however making each page a new experience.

For the text on the pages i would say there is a two column grid system and on the facing page there are images images displayed in different ways, each page is something new.

Three column grid system with large image on the facing page, layout seems to similar on each page.

Thoughts.

Not sure what corporate look i am wanting for my book, so i am looking into different layouts and themes i could use and then going back to the logo design and making it link with the theme and look of my book.

Logo Ideas

A first rough idea of the type of logo i could use for my branding.
Don't like the type face of the text however do like the
two lines representing the towers and eleven.

Im unsure wether this logo is slightly to morbid, and draining,
maybe needs to be more happy, and helping people remember the
event as it happened but needs to reflect good and positive views.

ideas

A quote from a surviver of 9/11, a description of how someone see ground zero now. Maybe use peoples views of how they view what happened and what is happening.
( how they'll remember)

Other Memorials

Looking at the Hiroshima Peace Site for some ideas. They have placed an memorial monument that covers a cenotaph holding the names of all of the people killed by the bomb, the arch shape represents a shelter for the souls of the victims. However altogether there isnt much online toward the memorial, with 9/11 being more recent maybe i should bring the way of researching it more available to people (videos, books, apps, books available on the ipad etc).

Hiroshima, capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in  western Honshu. It became best known as the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon, when the United States
Army Air Forces, dropped an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945.

Research

Looking at the National Anthem, for a possible catch line or
something that can resemble the feeling towards 9/11.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, (patriotic)
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Thoughts.

First thoughts are to make the brand typographical, plain type of maybe the names of people that died, or all the different emergency services that helped.

Research

Looking at the footage from the moments everything took place, New Yorkers are patriotic and have are all for the 'America' team. They want to show that they can move on in a positive way, was a tragedy and now they can remember it with pride.

After burning for an hour, the South Tower collapsed, followed later by the North Tower. The attacks on the World Trade Center resulted in 2,753 deaths. The cleanup and recovery at the World Trade Center site took eight months.

The construction was $400 million in the end, and both towers were completed by July 1973. At the time the World Trade Centre Buildings, were  the tallest buildings in the world, towering over the Empire State Building.
